Scientific Name: Iris pallida. Family: IRIDACEAE (Iridacées) The Iris of Florence can grow up to 3 feet high .Its long, large
murky green leaves are leathery and their veins run parallel. The hermaphroditic flowers are big, odoriferous, pale blue in
color and in groups of two or three per stem. The fruit is a capsule. The plant possesses subterranean rhizomes rich in starch.
It is originated from Greece, Mediterranean Europe, Western Asia, India, Morocco. It is grown for its aromatic rhizome.
It strives well in open spaces, sunny soil with adequate draining. It blooms from a period of April to June.
Production of the essence: The rhizomes are peeled, washed, dried in the sun or in moderately heated at 40 oC for two
years. It is further distilled to produce a concrete containing myristic acid.
It has a powdery, Iris, delicate, potent, woody, close to violet's odor. It is used as a raw trace material with heavy,
woody notes in perfumery.
